* FAA written test endorsement requires sign-off from a CFI. SPR Ground School prepares you for the test — your CFI provides the endorsement after reviewing your readiness.

Before you buy — read this

What this course is — and what it isn't.

We'd rather you know exactly what you're buying and succeed with it than buy it with wrong expectations. This is the most useful thing we can tell you.

This course IS:

  • Preparation for the FAA Private Pilot Knowledge Test
Everything tested on the FAA written exam — aerodynamics, weather, airspace, regulations, navigation, systems — covered in depth, not just memorized. Students who complete this course score an average of 85%+.
  • The knowledge foundation for your flight training
Understanding why a stall happens, how the altimeter works, and what Class B requires makes you a better student in the cockpit — not just a better test-taker. This course builds real understanding, not flashcard memory.
  • The best text-based ground school available at any price
Written by pilots, linked directly to FAA/AIM source material, with diagrams and illustrations for every major concept. If you learn better by reading than watching, this is built for you.
  • A complement to your CFI's instruction
Students who come to lessons having already studied the concepts get dramatically more out of their flight time. This course is how you show up prepared — so your CFI can go deep instead of starting from zero.
  • A lifetime reference you'll return to
Confused about the altimeter before a cross-country? Brushing up on airspace before flying into Class C for the first time? Come back anytime. You own this forever.

This course IS NOT:

  • A replacement for your CFI or formal ground instruction
The FAA requires your CFI to provide ground instruction and sign your logbook before you take the written test. This course cannot replace that relationship — and we wouldn't want it to. A great CFI is irreplaceable.
  • A source of FAA written test endorsement
Only a certificated flight instructor or authorized instructor can provide the written test endorsement (FAR 61.35). Some video-based courses (Sporty's, King Schools) include this — ours does not. Show your quiz results to your CFI; most will endorse you immediately.
  • Flight training or a substitute for cockpit time
Ground school covers the knowledge you need. You still need dual instruction, solo flight hours, and a practical test (checkride) with a DPE to earn your certificate. There is no shortcut to hours in the air.
  • A pure memorization / test-cramming tool
If you want to memorize FAA question-bank answers without understanding them, Sheppard Air does that well. This course is for pilots who want to actually understand the material — because you'll fly safer and be a better pilot for it.
  • A video course
There are no videos here — intentionally. The written format lets you go at your own pace, re-read what doesn't click, and study anywhere without headphones or a screen-lock. Many students find they retain more from reading than watching. But if video is how you learn best, Pilot Institute and King Schools are solid options.
💡
How most students use this course

Start the course before or alongside your flight training. Complete 1–2 modules per week at your own pace. Show your quiz scores to your CFI — most will get you endorsed within a session. Take the FAA written test. Then keep the course as a reference throughout your training whenever you need to revisit a concept before a lesson or checkride.

What students are saying

★★★★★
"I scored 94% on my written test. The weather module alone was worth the price — I finally understand METARs and TAFs properly instead of just memorizing them."
Marcus T.
Student pilot · Texas
★★★★★
"I tried a video course first and couldn't stay focused. This written format let me go at my own pace, re-read what I didn't understand, and actually retain it."
Sarah K.
PPL student · California
★★★★★
"The quiz explanations are what set this apart. When I got a question wrong, it explained exactly why — not just what the right answer was. That's real learning."

FAQ

Does this replace a CFI or actual ground school?
No — and we're upfront about that. SPR Ground School prepares you for the FAA Private Pilot written knowledge test and builds the aeronautical knowledge foundation you'll apply during flight training. Your CFI provides the formal ground instruction and the written test endorsement (sign-off) before you can take the FAA exam. Think of this as the most thorough study resource available — not a substitute for your CFI relationship.
Do I need an account or login?
No account required. After purchase, you'll be redirected to your access page where your course link and token are generated. Your progress is saved in your browser locally — no data leaves your device. This keeps it simple and private.
What if I need the FAA written test endorsement?
Your CFI provides the endorsement after reviewing your readiness. Most students complete our ground school, show their quiz scores and knowledge to their CFI, and get endorsed quickly. Some online courses (Sporty's, King Schools) include endorsements built in — if that's important to you, we recommend pairing our course with those. At $47 vs $299, you still come out well ahead.
How long does it take to complete?
At a comfortable pace, plan for 20–30 hours total across all 12 modules. Most students work through 2–3 modules per week alongside their flight training. There's no deadline — take as long as you need and revisit modules anytime.
Is there a refund policy?
Yes — if you complete fewer than 3 modules and aren't satisfied, contact us at support@studentpilotresource.com within 30 days for a full refund. No questions asked.
What devices does it work on?
All of them. The course is optimized for phone, tablet, and desktop. The reading experience on mobile is excellent — great for studying between lessons or during your commute.
